Alhamdulillah in Marrakech

Highlights from our recent visit to Marrakech to visit my niece Isobel McPhee, 19, who has been studying Arabic there this year.

Where we discovered a very swank, delicious, gourmet Moroccan hipster hang out of a restaurant called NOMAD:

and ate delectable dishes such as lentil salad with roasted beetroot and goat cheese, courgette and feta fritters with minted yoghurt, tagine de legumes du marche, brochettes d’agneau au cumin, aubergines, olives, e poivron, and their signature dish, the Nomad lamb burger with grilled aubergine and harissa mayonnaise.

In the kasbah, Isobel took us to her favorite street food vendor where we ate spicy, sweet sausages and chicken kebabs stuffed into their delicious round bread garnished with a gazpacho-like tomato sauce.

Isobel also took us to the Amal Women’s Training Center & Moroccan Restaurant not far from her school in the Gueliz district. It is a non-profit association dedicated to the empowerment of disadvantaged women through restaurant training and job placement.
The menu changes every day and there are at least two traditionally Moroccon dishes and two international dishes. It was a great meal in a lovely courtyard and very close to the exquisite Yves Saint Laurent Majorelle Gardens and the stunning Berber Museum within the gardens.

Besides spending oodles of money in the medina just in order to hear Isobel bargain in Arabic, we also managed to see some pretty cool art at the Dar Bellarj Foundation where they were having an exhibit of Moroccan women artists (the Foundation is very near the very beautiful Ben Yousseff Mosque).

And I also recommend a visit to the The Photography Museum of Marrakech

We can’t wait to go back to Morocco. Inshallah.
